Sygneca have made a preview release of our upcoming Kitten web application container available for download from our Open Source website.
Kitten (like Tomcat, but smaller) is a lean web application container intended for use with the Scala programming, language or with Java. Kitten is designed to have a small memory footprint, making it a lightweight alternative to Apache Tomcat, where the advanced configuration features of Tomcat and Sun’s servlet specification, far from giving the developer more control, actually restrict the developer’s flexibility. Kitten, in true UNIX style, keeps the implementation simple, whilst support for additional features is provided through external libraries.
One particular feature of Kitten is its ability to run multiple instances of the same application, allowing new versions of an application to be redeployed on-the-fly, phasing out older instances automatically as their sessions become inactive and expire. For developers familiar with either waiting for a lull in the number of active visitors using their web application before redeploying, or reluctantly accepting that the sessions of active users will be culled during redeployment, Kitten’s multiple instances feature spells an end to this problem.
